2018 Trip – Filomena

I'm excited about our upcoming trip in January, 2018.  We will be working in Tecpan.  I want to introduce you to one of the families we will work with:

Filomena is a 34-year old single mom.  Her husband was an alcoholic, and recently passed away from alcohol poisoning.  He left Filomena with seven children. Her daily life is very hard.  She is nursing a one-month old child.  She sells firewood, washes clothes and weaves fabric.  For all of her hard work, she only makes $2 a day.  It is impossible to support her family on that wage.  Her house is literally falling apart.  For women like Filomena, life is an unbearable struggle.  Can you imagine trying to feed your children on less than the cost of a Starbuck’s coffee?
Leydi is her 14-year old daughter. She had to stop going to school in order to begin working to help feed her brothers and sisters. Can you imagine the pressure on this little girl? Unfortunately, this is a devastating blow to Leydi's future. Once she dropped out of school, her opportunities for any kind of success in life just went away. Without an education, she will have no job skills. Our goal would be to help sponsor her education and allow her to go back to school.
Ivan is 12-years old, and is in 5th grade. Oscar is 10, and in 2nd grade. Magda is 7, and in pre-school. Geovany is 5, Dina is 2 and Julia is one-month old.
This family desperately needs our help. We will build a house for them. We would like to sponsor her kids in school. We would like to purchase weaving supplies to help Filomena grow her weaving business.
